Exercises with AQUATOOL

In this section users can download several guided exercises which have been designed to train the learner on the use of AQUATOOL modules and working methods for river basin management analysis.

Some of these exemples may be found in the publication “Ejercicios de sistemas de recursos hídricos resueltos con aquatool” edited by the Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universitat Politècnica de València with reference 2010.181

Next exercises are only available in Spanish, for the time being.

Exercise 1

In this first exercise, the SIMGES, OPTIGES, GESCAL and Aquival modules are worked on in different sections.

Case study's decription

Data

Section 1: SIMGES

Development exercise of a simulation model of the management (SimGes) of a basin. It is an essential introductory course for new users of the program. It includes the use of the graphical interface (AquaTool) for the development of models and basic working criteria for the analysis and calibration of hydrological models.

Section 2: OPTIGES

Basin management analysis exercise through optimization. It contains the development of an optimization model for watershed management using the OptiGes module

Section 3: GESCAL

Development exercise of a model of integral simulation of the quality and quantity of water. Here we describe step by step how a water quality simulation model is developed with the GESCAL module. It is also essential for the initiation of the student in the use of this program.

Section 4: SIMGES - Groundwater (Aquival)
Simulation exercise of a joint use model. This exercise is based on the model developed in the first exercise (1.1), in which the use of groundwater is added. For this exercise the Aquival module is used for aquifer modeling aimed at joint use analysis and the Simges module for simulation of the joint management of surface and groundwater.

Aquifer model in Aquival

Simulation scheme with aquifer eigenvalues

Section 5: Operating rules

Simulation exercise of the management of this case study using operating rules.

Exercise 2

Modeling exercise of water quality with the GesCal module. The text includes two examples focused on the modeling of water quality in a stretch of river and reservoirs.

Section 1: River section

A section of river is studied, which is affected by a wastewater discharge.

Exercise 4

Example of development of a Precipitation-Runoff model with the EvalHid tool. It is a practical hydrological modeling exercise applied to the river basin of the river located within the scope of the Duero River Basin.

Exercise 5

Example of development of a habitat simulation model with Caudeco. In this exercise a model of simulation of habitat will be implemented and the results of different simulations will be analyzed to show the possibilities offered by the Caudeco module.

Exercise 6

Below you can get several examples resolved with different levels of complexity for the RREA model. The explanation of all of them is found in the following document:

Exercise 7

Below you can see the full modeling with RREA of a real basin. The report describes step by step the collection of data and its preparation to build the model and obtain results. It also includes all the data used, the calculations to be made and the complete model assembled using the two procedures: spreadsheet and graphical user interface.

The scheme worked is a simplification of the case of the Duero basin, although the data does not correspond to the real data. This case is published with the consent of the Planning Office of the Duero basin.
